Hazel Miller, Nocturnes

One Grand Gallery is pleased to present a collection of new work by Spokane-based artist Hazel Miller. Nocturnes is an exhibition of textile-paintings and small sculptures that visualize a landscape devoid of humans and overflowing with chimerical beings. Miller’s work explores place-based spirituality through zoomorphic visions. Hybridized canines, felines, and birds stretch out beneath sun and stars, engulfed in the drama of coexistence.

The addition of textiles ventures these paintings into the realm of installation, transforming the gallery into an otherworldly space. Working between salvaged fabrics, metallics, mica, acrylic paints, charcoal, chalk pastels, embroidery, and beading these works reveal an imagined mythology of animal-esque idols, reminiscent of devotional icons across art history. Sunset and earth tones against velvety matte blacks evoke Romantic and Baroque paintings of the past, while heavily saturated jewel tones engulf spectators in ecstasy, rage, and melancholia.

Envisioning a world without people reveals itself to be a paradoxical pursuit; the chimeras beckon and enchant, yet keep us at a distance. The artist ruminates on her own role as human, woman, artist, and animal—an impossible, shapeshifting narrator who travels between worlds; she seeks spiritual transformation and belonging, but finds herself transfixed in cycles of fear and desire, evolving all the while.


Originally from San Antonio, TX (b. 1993), Hazel Miller now calls the Pacific Northwest her home. Currently she resides in Spokane, Washington, working out of her home studio and teaching at Gonzaga University as an adjunct art history professor. Meanwhile she is pursuing a graduate degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago through their Low-Residency MFA program, spending her summers in the Windy City. She received her BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR in 2016 and a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in 2018.
