Trygve Faste, Illusive Structures
May 2 -30, 2014
One Grand Gallery is excited to present Illusive Structures, a collection of solo works by artist Trygve Faste. Living and working in Eugene, Oregon, Faste designs, fabricates and paints 3D canvases expertly combining physical space with colorful dimension and depth. Currently a full time faculty member at the University of Oregon in the Product Design Program, Faste received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Painting in 2004.
Having received degrees in studio art as well as computer science Faste succeeded in uniting technology, science, mathematics, and art in his work as a professional designer. Illusive Structures further articulates these tropes as artwork in Faste’s multidimensional, painted forms. Faste’s works emit a sense of speed and efficiency of movement as they hang on the gallery walls. Susan Joyce of Fringe Exhibitions has said, “(Faste’s) work engages conceptual issues of material creation through an abstract visual language of implied functionality.” This ‘implied functionality’ is heightened as the viewer engages bold lines, conjoining angles and geometric shapes that make up Faste’s structures.
His choice of bright yellows, neon pinks, and electric blues work to enhance the visual space he has painted onto the 3D canvases. Faste’s method of creating ranges from pencil sketches and paper models to computer design, laser woodcutting and airbrushing. In these works Trygve has found a beautiful intersection between design, woodwork and color. His pieces can be interpreted to reflect elements of futuristic design, high-speed motor crafts, even contemporary product design and graffiti. Although the forms may echo these recognizable themes they remain hand crafted, multi dimensional, painted canvases like none you have ever seen, they remain Illusive Structures.
