I’m Jenna VanFleteren, a sculpture artist currently residing in Portland, OR. I was born and raised in Metro Detroit, where I was influenced by a wide range of artistic expressions and movements; industrial design, modernism, and crafts. In 2015, I received a BFA in crafts from College for Creative Studies. At CCS my art practice was focused on textile art and design; I also worked in mediums such as glass, ceramics, metals, and wood. Getting a formal fine arts and crafts education and pursuing a career in industrial design has allowed me to conceptualize manufacturing, processes, and materials in new and exciting ways. I want to challenge the function and meaning of objects that we often take for granted. In a post-industrialized, consumer society where everything is manufactured for familiarity and proximity, I believe the values that society assigns to objects are important to explore.
